WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF SKIRTING BOARDS?

The majority of us have skirting boards within our homes. They're called baseboards by Americans; others refer to them as kickboards or mouldings. In the bygone days they were known as"mop boards" because they allowed homeowners to mop the floors without soaking the walls plasterboard. This in UK they are called skirting boards.

Which are skirting boards?

Fundamentally, they're wooden, PVC or MDF boards running along the base of an interior walls. Skirting boards can be screwed, nailed or glued on the walls. . They're usually 5 to 15cm high and can be either painted or stained and they are either carved with flat or molding. Most popular skirting boards on the industry right now are solid oak skirting, solid walnut skirting, MDF laminate skirting and veneered skirting.

These boards are extremely important elements of floors complete and serve several functions in our houses.

Hiding dreadful wiring

We do not like electrical wirings hanging openly from the walls or the ceiling. If we'd love to conceal them at the ceiling we'll face many problems later on because in the case of repairs the entire ceiling may have to be tear down. More practical and economical is hiding the wiring at the skirting boards and many PVC boards are created for this purpose.

Covering Openings

It is extremely tricky even for many skilled fitters to maintain the floor aligned to the walls and it's simply inevitable to have a gaping space following the flooring installation is finished. Most builders choose skirting boards to cover unsightly openings over redoing the entire thing around again.

Damage avoidance

Skirting boards offer a barrier between the furniture and walls. They prevent the furniture from being positioned too close to the walls and producing unsightly marks on the background, ruining the plastering job or painting.

Acting as a decorative Component

By concealing the gaps between the walls and the flooring they provide a space much more professional and finished look. Boards can have ornamental mouldings on them so they are decorating the room as well. The planks may be painted to give a unifying look but occasionally they're painted in order to provide a contrasting element.
